Back in 2010 when ‘The Monitor’ was released I was a newly graduated bachelor, still living in a college town wondering what my next move would be. My friends and I had just formed a rock band, “Chaste by Bears”, and were sharing music with each other that would become the inspiration behind our group. When our band leader @pockets_up_top shared this album with us, we were blown away by the ferocity of the vocal delivery, fuzzed out guitar tones, and colossal riffs that still give me tingles. Maybe you’re like me and will listen to music based on season, almost exclusively. This @quincyjones track is a great example, and with a name like “ Summer in the City“ it makes perfect sense why. I love finding the original source material of classic samples. In this case, The Pharcyde flipped this into a Hip-Hop classic “Passin’ Me By” (produced by @jswiftpharcyde)

Another album from Miles Davis’ Prestige catalog, this is one of four albums recorded in just two sessions with his quintet. Since they had to pay for the studio time themselves, they were basically recording the sessions live with little editing and fewer takes. I was in high school when I first heard Miles Davis, and like most I was introduced to his music on ‘Kind of Blue’. It was a CD that was given to me by my father’s best friend, and after listening on repeat I decided to explore the rest of Miles Davis’ catalog. I found this song by chance, on Napster of all places, and immediately knew it was special; the in-studio chatter at the song’s beginning, Red Garland’s block chord introduction on piano, and the tone of Miles Davis’ muted horn made this ballad so intimate. It honors its RnB roots while covering “Cruisin’”, a Smokey Robinson track from the late 70’s. It’s a refreshing reminder that no music is ever really new, and that there’s always room on the record shelf for more baby-makin’ music.

Starr began his career as a member of several doo-wop groups before signing with Motown Records in 1968. He quickly became known for his energetic live performances and his ability to engage with audiences.
